Migrating Attractions explores lives beyond the prescribed “signature” travel routes, drawing from my personal experiences in Morocco and China. Grounded in Dean MacCannell’s theory of choreographed performance, the project traces the staging, mediation, and commodification of cultural authenticity—from the front stage to the backstage. Using Morocco and China as case studies, it examines how landscapes and traditions, shaped by colonial histories, trade routes, and urbanization, are repackaged to meet external expectations. In doing so, it reveals how this process obscures histories of the marginalization of indigenous cultures and displacement driven by ecological transformation.
